ACCOUNT & SIGNATURE SHORTCUTS

Have you ever wished that you could switch accounts or signatures in a new message you’re writing without having to fetch the mouse as you’re typing? Signatures in particular require a tedious search in a submenu of the Message menu. Now you can use any keyboard shortcut you like (if not already taken by another OE command or script). Any script can have a keyboard shortcut, so the installer scripts in this folder make separate scripts for each Account or Signature for which you would like a shortcut. They guide you through the procedure of selecting a shortcut, and check to make sure that it’s not already taken in OE, either by a standard OE shortcut or by one of your own scripts (including those in subfolders). The installers make the script for you, and put it in the right place. You don’t even have to bother with learning OE’s code for naming scripts with key shortcuts. The setup procedure carefully helps you do that, rejecting any invalid or unavailable ones. All you have to do is press the keys.

Add contact (smarter) v1.1

This script has been modified for OE 5.

This script functions like the "Add Sender to Contacts" menu item, but behaves more like the function in Emailer. If a user with that name already exists, a new address is added to the existing contact. Also, the contact is opened. It requires Outlook Express 4.01 or later.

Add contact (smartest) v1.1

This script has been modified for OE 5.

This script functions like the "Add Sender to Contacts" menu item, but with the following additions:

1. It looks in both the from and to fields. This allows you for instance, to add mailing list addresses which are in the to field.

2. If a user with that name already exists two behaviors can occur: a. If the email address is new, it will be added as a secondary address and the contact will be opened. b. If the existing contact already has this email address, a dialog asks if the user wishes to edit the contact.

It doesn't work in draft windows.

-- If you do not want to be asked whether or not to open the contact's record, you can edit the script and change the third parameter of the handler call for myUpdateContact from "true" to "false." You can do this separately for the "To" field and the "From" field. In particular, if you usually use this for messages are sending, you probably don't want to be asked whether you want to edit your own contact record every time you run the script.

-- The procedure can be used to add the addresses for "To" recipients to the address book. It adds them as individual contacts, whereas the script, "Make Group from Recipients," adds the To recipients and makes them part of a group.

ADDRESS BOOK LIST 1.2 (updated)

This script will print an alphabetical list of all contacts from your Outlook Express Address Book with each listing containing the following information:

first name last name , , (etc.), Home Phone: (number), Work Phone: (number)

with each contact entry on a separate line. It is an alphabetical listing by last name although the first name appears first, as in the Address Book. Entries without last names or first names appear at the top. Contacts with missing fields, even those lacking any email address (if you use your OE Address Book to include this type of contact) will still appear without error. The list will thus be a printed version of the main Address Book window with all default fields, except that it will contain secondary email addresses as well as the default one.

New in v1.1/1.2: Names are now listed the right way round (first name(s) - last name) although still alphabetical by last name, just like the Address Book. The script now prints out the list for you, and removes any temporary aids. And it’s a little faster. v1.2 fixes a bug where contacts without first name, last name or e-mail address would error the script, and another where single-name (just first or last name) contacts without e-mail addresses had their names at the end of the entry line instead of the beginning.

Archive Flagged Messages

This script takes every flagged message and moves it to a subfolder that ends with the word "Archive". It is best to use this script on a quit schedule, since it can take a long time, depending on the number of messages in the folder. It is recursive to four levels.

Version 1.1 offers significant speed enhancement and bumps recursion up to four levels from the previous three.

Archive Folder to HTML

Archive Folder to HTML is a script for Outlook Express that archives all the messages in an Outlook Express folder into HTML files suitable for putting on the Web. This is useful for archiving mailing lists to make them searchable on the web. After a message is archived, it is moved to another folder within Outlook Express.

Archive Messages

These scripts provide a simple way to archive messages from Outlook Express 5.

Export as Individual Message Archive script takes the folder that is selected in OE or all OE folders and exports the messages and subfolders to the Finder. Each message is exported as an individual OE Message file. Message history, edited flagging/priority, and read/unread status are not retained.

Import Individual Message Archive script takes a selected Finder folder and imports the OE message files and subfolders it contains into OE. This script takes awhile to run.

Archive to Subfolders 1.2

Archive to Subfolders automates the task of archiving mail into neatly grouped subfolders. These subfolders are generated for you based on the name of the folder being archived. AUTO-REPLY ACCOUNT 2.0

With this script, you can set up a Mail Rule and a Schedule to answer speci¹c mail by Auto-Reply, using a different e-mail account from the one to which the mail is received. Outlook Express’ normal behavior replies only from the account at which the mail is received, and cannot be overridden by any options available when the reply is automatic from a Mail Rule Reply, nor can it quote original message text nor store the replies anywhere but the Sent Items folder. The script is particularly useful if you have a number of “dummy” receiving accounts and want your auto-replies to go out from SMTP-only accounts with the same name, instead of from your all-purpose main POP account to which the dummy-addressed messages get redirected. You can also use this script to send auto-replies from your default account in order to avail yourself of the superior text-quoting and storage options offered.

v2.0 operates on a completely different system from earlier versions. It allows any number of Auto-Reply set-ups to be run from one script and places just one top-level Auto Reply folder in your Folder Pane, with fewer subfolders within. It gives you preferences within the script set-up for sending (Now or Later), quoting original text in Replies with either a default or a customized attribution line or internet header address block, and for storage (folders) or deletion of both original incoming messages and your auto-replies. You can adjust the names of folders and texts of the auto-replies easily at any time without using the script. Even if you just want to set up auto-replies that quote original text and/or store the messages in their own folders using the default account, you can do it with this script.

BCC ALL 2.2 (with all OE's reply preferences)

Reply to All with all original To and CC recipients as BCC recipients (To: original sender only)

This script opens up a new draft message window based on the selected received message, sent by original sender to several recipients, so you can "reply to all" with only the original sender in the To: field, and all original CC recipients and original To recipients (except yourself) in the BCC: field. Users who wish to suppress the full list of e-mail addresses as originally sent – particularly if you are adding new recipients yourself and need to protect others' privacy – and miss the way you could drag the To and CC addresses to BCC in OE 4.5 can now have the same function in OE 5.

Version 2.2 Minor bug fix: v2.1 could sometimes end up with two signatures when “signature above” was selected Original message now has reply flag set in message pane

From Version 2.1 - new features: Allows you to assemble your own attribution line or address block, in any language Adds a preference for indenting replies when used with HTML default format Lets you choose whether your signature is below or above quoted reply text

BCC All 2.2 gives you the complete versatility of reply formats in Outlook Express, encompassing virtually every preference available in the OE Preference Reply panel, and then some, when you have Akua Sweets 1.3.8 (or higher) scripting addition installed.

Bulk Forward 1.1

This script will forward all received messages selected en masse in your Inbox or any other OE folder to a recipient you choose and enter. It can send on attachments as well. It is a rather distant adaptation of a similar script for Claris Emailer by David Cortwright.

v1.1 improves handling of attachments: v1.0 could run into an AppleScript error under certain circumstances, or if the attachment name was badly formed or too long, or if more than one attachment among the various messages had the same name. v1.1 solves all these potential problems.

Burst Malformed Digest 1.1

This is a new script I wrote to burst malformed digests which don't conform to any of the RFCs related to mailing list digests. The reason I wrote this script is because people were having problems when they used the “Burst Non-RFC Digest” script to burst large digests. I rewrote this new bursting code from scratch to make it more memory-friendly and faster. It should work on all the large digests where people were having problems and getting errors like “stack overflow error”.

The latest version of this script should always be able to be found at:

Burst Non-RFC Digest 1.1

This script will burst non-standard mailing-list digests (types that OE 5 cannot burst on its own). This script is based on the modified extract scripts for MIME and RFC digests originally written by R Shapiro and later modified by Philip Kearney and Andy.

Version 1.1 adds support for yet another non-standard format.

Burst ONElist Digest

This is a new script I wrote to burst malformed digests from the "ONElist" http://www.onelist.com/ mailing-list server site which don't conform to any of the RFCs related to mailing list digests. If you are on a ONElist mailing-list and get it in digest format, you will see that the digest doesn't follow any known standard. Those people at ONElist are lame, yell at them to create standard RFC-compliant non-MIME digests if you so desire.

There are preferences to this script that will be set the first time the script is run and the first time after modifications have been made to it. These preferences can also be edited by the user from within the script. These preferences optionally add a Reply-To: line, hide the dialog that displays the final report, and move the digest to the deleted mail folder. You must run this script at least once from the AS menu to set the preferences. If the script is only run from rule through the Mailing List Manager, only the default preferences will be used.

The Reply-To: line is based on the Reply-To: header of the original digest or, if not present, the original sender of the digest.

The latest version of this script should always be able to be found at:

Burst Universal

Warning: Some editing in Script Editor will be required. I hard code the path to the scripts folder; you will need to edit it to reflect your system. Also, I store my bursting scripts in a sub-folder of "Script Menu Items" called "Extract." You will probably want to remove that folder name (or else create such a folder for yourself).

Requires two additional scripts by Phil Kearney, "Burst Malformed Digest" and "Burst Onelist Digest", which it invokes when appropriate.

This script should handle nearly every kind of mailing list digest, and burst it correctly. It tests for a "OneList" or "Egroups" digest and uses Phil's script for that if it detects it. If not, it tries to burst using the internal OE "burst" Applescript command. If that fails, it offers to try using "Burst Malformed Digest."

This script adds a user-defined email address to the Cc list of the frontmost draft window and then sends the frontmost draft window. Collate

"Collate" is a script for Outlook Express 5. (Warning: It will crash OE 4.5). When you send a mail message, a previously established outgoing rule calls "Collate." Collate will create a subfolder inside the "Sent Items" folder, using the "To:" recipient name, provided one does not already exist. CONTACT SHEETS

This script will print out a fully detailed set of information sheets on any OE Contact, or several Contacts, which you select (click to highlight) in the Address Book. Neither the Address Book page itself, nor any of individual contact panels, nor any of the Group panels in OE can be printed in standard OE operation. This script thus enables you to take the information sheets wherever you may need them, away from your computer. It is particularly useful if you are using the OE Address Book as an all-purpose directory and find yourself at a loss when you’re going to a meeting, for example, or travelling. Just print out the sheets in a few seconds before you go.

The contact sheets include every item of information which you have fed into the relevant contact panel(s), but without unsightly empty headed fields: only those fields which you have filled in are copied to the Contact Sheet. Home phone, “other” business phone, cell phone, fax, web page, job title: whatever it is, if it’s in the Address Book, you’ll find it on the sheet.

You can select one contact at a time, or several at once, and the script will print them all in alphabetical order. You can select a Group, or any number of Groups for a list of all the group members’ names and e-mail addresses, followed by a set of contact sheets, one for each group member who is a fully-fledged contact in the Address Book. (If you would like the Group lists and Group contact sheets in alphabetical order, please download the script Group Sheets in the folder Group Stuff on this page.) You can even press command-A to select the entire Address Book and the whole thing will be printed.

Delete Duplicates in Folder v1.1

Deletes messages having the same subject, sender, date and time within a folder. Useful if you accidentally import a group of messages twice, or duplicate a group of messages accidentally.

Digest a Thread 1.4 (with adjust subject)

This script will delete all messages of a particular subject thread from the folder or Inbox where they have been saved, and will create a digest that incorporates every message in the thread. It gets rid of any quoting of previous messages in later messages when the quoting is by quote characters >, since you will already have the quoted messages in the thread. You can apply the script again if you get more messages in the thread later, and it will incorporate the newest messages without altering the already "digested" ones. Adjust Subject script is included so as to be able to include any thread messages whose subjects have been altered and would thus otherwise not be included in the digest.

Special feature: You have the choice whether to include attachments from the thread into the digest: all, none, or select specific attachments from a complete list. (You are also informed if there aren’t any in the thread.)

Digest OE -> Eudora 1.4

These scripts take a very large MIME or RFC (RFC 934 and any digest created with one of R Shapiro's scripts) digest and convert it to the format of a Eudora mailbox. The mailbox file can then be imported into OE using the Import Messages... menu item. This script 5/work in cases where other scripts fail to burst very large MIME digests. File Messages v2

The "Move To" menu in Outlook Express is limited to 20 folders. Many people, like myself, have ten or fifteen main folders, each with multiple sub-folders. I have about 90 folders in all. The Move To menu simply isn't adequate for convenient filing away of messages. Although you can choose to select the full folder listing, that appears in main folder order, and navigating to the subfolders can be tedious.

This script attempts to make the task of filing messages easier and quicker. It will present a dialog asking you to type in a few characters of the folder name, and then will present a full alphabetic listing of all of your folders, however deeply nested, (sorted by the bottom-level folder name, so that "Otto" in your "Persons" folder and "Outlook Express" in your "Mailing Lists" folder will sort together), highlighting the first folder that matches the characters you typed. If you type "ou" you will highlight "Outlook Express." To select that folder all you need to do is hit the Return or Enter key.

File Originals After Reply

This script duplicates in OE5 one of my favorite features of Claris Emailer: the ability to automatically move messages to the Read Mail folder from the In Box after you reply to them. By editing variables in the script, you can choose (1) the folder to which messages are moved after they are replied to, (2) the folder(s) from which messages will be moved when you reply, and (3) whether to automatically close the window containing the original when the reply is sent.

FILE REPLY IN SAME FOLDER 1.7

This script will save any reply you send out to the same folder as the message to which you are replying. This is very useful when you have different folders for specific correspondence. If you wish you could have this same option for any folder as is offered by the Mailing List Manager for mailing lists only, this script will enable it.

New in v1.7: Version 1.7 enables subfolders of the Inbox and fixes two bugs: 1) the script failed if you had created no top-level folders (only inbox subfolders); 2) the script failed if you have only very few messages (fewer than your "depth") in any folder being checked.

FIND CONTACT BY PHONE

Find a contact from his or her phone number. Or check a number from a Caller ID display without a name to see if you know the caller (if it’s in your Address Book). If the number is not in your Address Book, you will be so alerted. It will go much faster if you can restrict the phone fields to just "Home" and/or "Work", for example, when offered the option in the first dialog, if you have a large Address Book with many entries in the selected fields: otherwise don't worry about it. To update the lists of phone numbers if you have added new contacts, or to change the aggregate of phone fields for r any search, hold down the Command key as you select the script, with Jon's Commands scripting addition installed (available free from http://macscripter.com). If you move to another area code (or it changes on you), or you made a mistake when entering it, hold down both Command and Control keys when selecting the script. Otherwise, when running the script for subsequent searches, it will just ask you for the phone number to search for, and will display the names of any contacts listing that number. For local numbers, you can leave out the area code.

Fix Broken From Lines

This script fixes the "broken" From header prepended to message headers by some mail servers. The line in question starts with "From" not followed by a colon and contains the sender's email address followed by a time stamp.

OE 5.0 does not handle these lines properly, and resultant problems include display of the wrong information in the "From" column in list views and appending a time stamp to the "From:" header.

Folders with New

Lately, I've been waxing nostalgic about the Auto File Log from Claris Emailer. This script is my attempt toward meeting the need the AFL filled. The script swiftly builds a list of all folders and subfolders that contain new, unread messages, and allows you to select a folder to be opened from the list. The number of unread messages is indicated in the list, following each folder name. The script remembers the list, and deletes the folder you have just opened from that list, so the next time the script is run, you see one less folder in the list. A dialog appears briefly, allowing you to choose from three buttons: Rebuild (rebuilds the new folder list, useful if you have picked up new mail since the list was built), Cancel (exits the script), or Previous (uses the previously built list). The default button is Previous, and will be selected if you press Return, or if you do nothing for five seconds (the dialog disappears automatically after five seconds).

When you select a folder from the list, it immediately opens in a separate window. Only one folder can be selected at a time.

Group Stuff 1.2-4 scripts

GROUP SORT – alphabetical!
This script puts the group entries (members) of all your groups into alphabetical order – something the standard operation of OE cannot do. (Your Group members presently appear in their Group windows in the haphazard order in which you entered them over time.) Version 1.1 fixes a bug which affected group members whose first (or middle) name is the same as the last name. It now also alphabetizes strictly according to how last names are entered in the Address Book.

GROUP LISTS
This script makes a list, for every Group in your Address Book, of all the Group members’ names and e-mail addresses. The e-mail addresses in the list are “dynamic” - clicking on any one brings up a draft message addressed to the addressee as recipient. This is a very convenient way to find a group member when you want to send an email message just to the one member. You can’t do this from OE’s Group windows. You can also print out any Group list, which is not possible in standard OE operation.

GROUP SHEETS
This script will print out a fully detailed set of information sheets on all the members of any OE Group which you select (click to highlight) in the Address Book.

GROUP RECREATE
This script will recreate all your groups if you have previously stored them in a "Groups" folder with the script "Group Lists". It is particularly useful if you need to rebuild your Address Book, and even more so if you have lost your original groups in the process.

Import/Export Address

These three scripts can be useful to export an address list for use with my OE 5 Bulk Mail script They are also useful by themselves. The pair of scripts to export and import groups from the Address Book can be used to save a record of groups before doing a complex rebuild of the database, and then to restore the groups after the rebuild.

Export Address Groups - Lets you select one or more groups from a list of your Address Book groups, and to export a listing of the members of those groups. Each group is listed separately with a group name heading, and for each member, the display name and E-mail address is listed. The file created is named “Address Groups List” and is saved to your Desktop. If a file of that name already exists, you are asked if you wish to replace it or to append to it, so you can create one file containing the output of multiple runs of the script.

Import Address Groups - Lets you select an input text file. It expects the file to be in the format produced by the “Export Address Groups” script, and uses this input to recreate groups in your address book. If a group already exists, the names in the input file will be added to the existing group. And WARNING, the script will duplicate names in a group if you load the same names more than once.

Export Selected Addresses - Based on a script by James A Negro, adapted for OE 5 by Allen Watson. Copies the email addresses for selected addresses, writes tab-delimited records to a text file, "Address List," on the Desktop.

Incoming->Outgoing 1.1

This script takes a message that OE 5 considers to be an incoming message (sent or unsent) and marks it as a sent, outgoing message. This is useful for fixing imported messages that have become mismarked as incoming, for example, messages that have been dragged out of OE to the Finder and then dragged back into OE.

Use this script with caution, because things can get confusing if you designate incoming messages as outgoing ones when this is really not the case.

Version 1.1 retains the "received" and "sent" dates of the original message.

Listen v0.2

This script will update your default OE signature with a message stating what you are listening to in the MP3 player SoundJam. You need to set up an Outgoing Mail Rule that calls this AppleScript. The signature is changed after a message is sent and thus doesn't take effect until the next message is sent. This was done because OE doesn't allow a message's content to be changed right before it is sent.

Log Attachments

This is a package of two scripts:

Remove with Log removes attachments from selected messages and leaves log entries in the messages indicating what the attachments were. It can be used by people who wish to save their attachments manually and then eliminate them from the OE database. Using this script provides a record, at the end of the message, of the attachments that originally came in with the message.

Save & Remove with Log is similar, except it saves attachments to a user-specified folder before removing them. It can be used in conjunction with an incoming mail rule to auto-file attachments, leave a log in their accompanying message, and then delete the attachments from the OE database.

Warning: Extreme care should be exercised in the use of these scripts, since they are completely deleting information from OE's database. Use the rules at your own risk, and test them thoroughly before relying on them to work as intended.

Make group from recipients

With an outgoing or sent message open, this script will prompt for the name of a group in your Address Book (or create a new group), and will then add all of the recipients (To, CC and BCC) of the message to the selected group, avoiding duplicates. If a recipient of the message is not in your Address Book, the script will ask if you want to add it, skip it, or abort the update. The script also fills the "Description" field of all new group members with the name of the Group. (You might want to edit the relevant line.) If a recipient already is a member of the group, the script alerts you and does not add the address a second time.

The script will not work on incoming messages. If you receive a message with a long list of addresses which you want to add to a group in your address book, simply generate a reply-all to the message, and then run the script. You can delete the reply afterwards.

Messages to Disk v2

This script will take either the currently incoming message or the currently selected messages already in OE and save them to disk.

- Always prompts for location of folder for storing messages.

- Allows choice of text file types: BBEdit, Tex-Edit Plus, Simple Text. You can add other program names and creator codes to the lists where "creatorNames" and "creatorTypes" are defined.

- Gives progress report after storing each message, with option to turn off. Beeps twice when all files have been stored.

- Fixed bugs in routine for making file name when first choice is already in use. Would fail if name was exactly 31 characters; got stuck in repeat sometimes trying to find valid name.

- Added code to re-wrap (remove hard line endings from) the message text. If you don't want to do this, change the property "rewrapping" to false. This allows your text editor to soft wrap the text to your window size.

- Rather than including entire source with miscellaneous headers, I select the recipients, from address, subject, sent date, and the body of the message. This makes for a "cleaner" text file with less extraneous stuff at the top.

OE Many to Word v2.2

Would you like to export the entire contents of one of your OE folders into one long MS Word document broken up by date stamps... sort of a long journal of correspondence?

This script will take one or more selected messages (or a single message if open) and will write them all to a single Microsoft Word document.

The headers as well as message content are written, so you have a record of the date and time the message was sent, and by whom to whom. A divider line is inserted between messages. The document is given a heading of "CONSOLIDATED MESSAGES" that also indicates the folder from which the messages were extracted, and the date and time of the extraction.

Changes in version 2.1:

The message being processed is now processed differently for incoming messages, outgoing (sent) message, and draft messages, giving a better record of the message.

Instead of accessing the "source" of a message, which included header information automatically, but which also included attachments where present, the script now gets the body of the message with "content" and then formats the header fields separately, according to the class of message. Thus, attachments are no longer copied into the Word file. Of necessity, non-standard headers are now not included.

On outgoing messages, all recipients (regardless of To, CC, BCC) are listed.

The paragraphs of the body are "unwrapped" (hard returns between lines are removed) so that they will wrap automatically in Word. Unwrapping prevents the messages in Word from having jagged line endings due to the hard returns. Rewrapping will also remove tabs and spaces at the start of every line. This feature can be disabled by changing the property "rewrapping" at the top of the script from true to false.

The beep signals have been removed except for the final "beep" to indicate completion.

New in 2.2: If a message has attachments, write a note at the end of the message listing the attachments.

Open Folder

Open Folder from List

OPEN FOLDER FROM LIST will present a sorted list of all folders and subfolders in your folder hierarchy. The lower level name will be the primary sort field. Thus a third level folder, John in folder CoWorkers in folder Work, will be sorted as "John>CoWorkers>Work". Each time you use the script you will see a dialog box asking you to type in the first few letters of the folder you want to open. If you type in "jo" and hit return, the script will position to the first folder name in the list starting with "jo." You then can fine-tune your selection with up or down arrow key movement, if necessary, and hit return again to select the desired folder, which will then open in a separate window.

The folder list is created or re-created only when you click on the REBUILD button in the first dialog box. It is stored in the script, so the script runs very fast once the list has been built. When you add or delete folders, just type in the letters as usual and then click Rebuild instead of OK, and a new list will be created.

Other Account

This script, when attached to a repeating Schedule, will automatically change the account of a new outgoing message to a non-default account for specified recipients (such as mailing lists, or anything else) before it’s sent. Since clicking “New” in the toolbar, or “New Mail Message” in the Message menu, or pressing cmd-N all bring up a new draft window preset to emanate from your default account, you may often find that you’ve sent a message from the wrong account to certain recipients. In particular, if you subscribe to mailing lists from a different account, your e-mail messages to the lists will keep bouncing back to you if sent from the default account. Here’s how to get rid of that problem, and let the script take care of it automatically. Follow the sequence in the ReadMe.

Outlook Express Menu 1.1

“Outlook Express Menu” is a contextual menu plug-in for use with Outlook Express. It is used as an easy way to select things like files/folders, text or Web page links and add them to either a new mail message or insert them into the current message you are composing in Outlook Express.

Version 1.1 contains one new feature and that is the ability to handle "mailto" URLs in IE web pages. With this new feature you can ctrl-click on a mailto URL in a web page and add the e-mail address(es) in that URL as a recipient to a new or else the current message. You can choose to add the address(es) in that mailto URL either as a "To:", "Cc:" or even a "Bcc:" recipient.

Progress Window Connect 2.4

NEW in v2.4: Progress Window Connect 2.4 is a new version of the script which opens the Progress window in OE 5 while mail is being sent and received, and then closes it when the activity is complete, just as in OE 4.5. Version 2.4 gives you a preference when you set it up, so that if you connect to the Internet via PPP (the built-in Apple ARA or PPP), you can choose to disconnect automatically after the Send & Receive or other Schedule running the script is finished. It will not disconnect you if you are connected before the Schedule or script is run, only if the Schedule/script initiates an internet connection. If you have MacOS 8.5 or higher, the script itself will know if you connect via PPP and will not bother you if you connect by DSL, cable, T1, LAN, etc.. If you have an earlier OS, it will ask you.

v2.4 maintains the improvements of v2.3, which normalized use when OE is in the background and allows you to select one, more, or all your OE accounts for displaying an open Progress Window during downloads, and to choose whether to check mail or not for the unselected accounts. You can change the selection at any time, Or, if you want to see all your accounts on occasion, including the normally unselected accounts, just open the Progress Window manually before running the script or Schedule. The script may be called in Schedules you define and so can be set to run on Startup and on Schedules – including "Send & Receive All" set to run every few minutes – even if you are not at your computer. Special provision has to be made in the schedules for Hotmail accounts: see the ReadMe.

R Shapiro's OE 4.5 Scripts

Extract

RFC - Extracts all messages from digests which follow one of the two RFC formats. My key binding is option-x.
Message from Digest - Extracts a single message, as selected, from a digest. Be sure to select the entire message you want to extract, including all headers.
MIME - Extracts all messages from a MIME digest (eg the MacOE list). My key binding is control-x.
Heuristic - Attempts to extract messages from a non-standard digest. Use this only if RFC and MIME fail, and don’t expect miracles...

Forward

RFC934 - Makes a digest of one or more messages and prepares it for sending. Only essential headers are included for each message. My key binding is control-f.
All Headers - Makes a digest of one or more messages and prepares it for sending. All headers are included for each message. Handy for reporting abuse, delivery problems, etc.

Import/Export

BBEdit Import - Imports a message from the contents of the front BBEdit window. Requires commercial BBEdit (not Lite).
TexEdit Import - Imports a message from the contents of the front TexEdit Plus window.
Eudora Export - Exports any selected messages into a Eudora-formatted file. Outgoing messages will be recognized as such by Eudora. This is slower than the next two but can be used on a combination of incoming and outgoing messages
Eudora Export Source - Simple, fast script for exporting incoming messages into a Eudora-formatted file (much faster than Eudora Export). This exports the full source, including MIME information, attachments, rich text, etc.
Eudora Import - Imports a Eudora (or other sendmail) file as an OE folder. This script uses Eudora conventions to distinguish incoming from outgoing mail.
Eudora Import source - Imports a Eudora (or other sendmail) file as an OE folder. This script imports the messages as source, which means OE should recognize rich-text, html, MIME, attachments etc. It will produce anomalous messages if the mail file contains any outgoing Eudora mail.

Message

View source in BBEdit - Opens a BBEdit window with the full source of the current message as its contents. Requires commercial BBEdit (not Lite).
View source in TexEdit - Opens a TexEdit Plus window with the full source of the current message as its contents.

Reply

In Digest to Author - Sets up a reply to selected text, usually in a digest, using the selected Subject line as the subject of the reply and the selected From as the recipient.
In Digest to List - Sets up a reply to selected text, usually in a digest, using the selected Subject line as the subject of the reply and the sender of the digest itself as the recipient.
With Attribution - Sets up a reply with an attribution line. My key binding is option-r.
To From - Sets up a reply with an attribution line, using the sender as the address in all cases, even if a Reply-To is present. Handy for replying to the author of a message that comes from a mailing list in which the Reply-To is set to the list itself (the MacOE list is an example). My key binding is control-r.

Text

BBEdit->OE - Replaces the contents of the front OE window with the contents of the front BBEdit window. Requires the commercial version of BBEdit (not Lite).
OE->BBEdit - Inverse of BBEdit->OE.
TexEdit->OE - Replaces the contents of the front TexEdit Plus window with the contents of the front TexEdit Plus window.
OE->TexEdit - Inverse of TexEdit->OE.
Count Words - Counts characters, words, and lines in the current message or selection.

Remove eGroups Ads v1.1

Remove the annoying ads inserted by eGroups at the beginning of every message.

v1.1 - Revised so that the script will stop scanning the message after it has removed one ad. When a long digest message was scanned, the process of checking every line after the ad at the top was taking too long. Apparently, eGroups always places their ads at the top of the message, so once the first has been deleted, there are no more. The script now runs much more quickly.

Remove Spaces from Contacts 2.1

This script removes leading and trailing option-spaces in first name, last name, and email addresses of Outlook Express contacts. They may be hiding in your Contacts list, particularly if you have imported contacts from other programs. Invisible trailing spaces in Contacts listings, if not removed, will prevent email messages from arriving at their intended destinations. This script will fix all such errors automatically.

This script is a standalone applet. Do NOT put this script in the Outlook Express Script Menu Items folder. Keep it anywhere on your hard disk or desktop and double-click it to run.

REPLY REROUTED ACCOUNT/REPLY ALL REROUTED ACCOUNT

Reply from another Account than the one(s) to which a message was sent, when specified. Mail to any account at particular email domains can be rerouted and replied to from a specified (including non-default) OE account, which may have a different domain. All other messages will follow your normal account preferences: the scripts automatically take care of it. All of OE’s various Reply preferences are available. With the the keyboard shortcuts you can use these scripts instead of OE’s Reply and Reply All buttons and menu items in all cases.

These scripts open up a new draft message window based on the selected received message but sent from a different account than the one sent to. This can be useful for separating particular business subdivisions, for example, or rerouting all your business mail to your personal account and replying from a business account which is SMTP only. The scripts come with keyboard shortcuts: control-R for Reply, and shift-control-R for Reply All If you use them consistently for replying to messages, you need never think about which account needs to be selected: the script will do it for you. It will reply to other messages exactly as normal, including your standard reply account choice for all other messages, but will automatically switch accounts for those messages sent to specified domains to the special account you have selected. It also gives you virtually every reply format that Outlook Express offers in its own Reply Preferences, and then some.

Retrieve Deleted Message 1.2

These scripts will enable you to retrieve the last message you deleted and put it back into the folder where it came from. It is sometimes very difficult to find the message you just deleted without thinking because the Deleted Items folder lists messages by date received, not by last one to be deleted. Each script has a keyboard shortcut. To delete and remember a message you should now use option-d rather than the standard delete key or command-d . If you then press shift-option-d, the last message deleted will be retrieved and moved back to where it was.

New in v 1.2: If you delete a message open in its own window, the next message in the folder will open, as in normal OE practice. And if you then retrieve the deleted message, it will again open into its own window. (If you are deleting from the message pane, deleting and retrieving will occur without opening windows.)

You can run the script from a Mail Rule to automatically handle any or all incoming messages and save (and expand) all attachments as messages come in. You have the option to whether or not to remove the attachments from the message and the OE database when they are saved as files, and another to choose whether to open the files or folders automatically as you run the script, or to go to them as selected in your saved attachments folder, or just to stay in Outlook Express without doing either. You can override your own default choice in any particular message by holding down modifier keys.

Version 2.0 can handle multilingual messages in Mac OS 8.5 and higher when you are using Character Sets installed by any language kit.

v2.0 now colors the message headers in the message pane a distinctive russet color when its attachments have been saved and removed by a Rule and displays an Edit flag instead of a red flag. This way you can continue to use red flags for your usual purposes.

If you are upgrading from an earlier version, note that v 2.0 requires Akua Sweets 1.4 and Stuffit Commands 5.5 scripting additions (osaxen), not Jon’s Commands as in versions 1.0-1.5.

Requirements: OE 5, OE 4.5, Jon's Commands 2.1, Stuffit Commands 5.5 scripting additions (osaxen)

Send Autoreply

This script is a stay open Applescript applet. It checks incoming mail every 15 minutes, and sends an autoreply to all incoming messages in your Inbox folder. It tracks the senders and sends only one reply message to an individual sender. To use, OE must be open. Then simply launch the applet by doubling clicking, etc. A dialog box will appear in which you can type an autoreply message. After sending an autoreply it marks the messages as "read".

SEND TO MAILING LIST

When run from a linked Mail Rule in OE 5, this script allows you to run a mailing list from Outlook Express. Put all the members of your list into a Group. Whenever an email comes in from a list member it will be immediately sent out to the whole group. Unlike a Redirect, replies will go to you at your list account (and get sent out again), not to the sender. Unlike a Forward, it won't have the FW: prefix and other Forward paraphernalia in the message text.

The default behavior is to send the message straight out to the list. But if you install the scripting addition Jon's Commands 2.1 or higher , then you can toggle the send behavior to queue in the Outbox, where you can inspect the messages if you wish.

SEPARATE BCCs for PRIVACY

Although Outlook Express hides all BCC recipients from all recipients, mail servers will frequently add them back in to the headers to be found in “Source”, thus defeating the purpose and divulging all the names and email addresses to anyone who takes the slight trouble of looking at the headers. This is no fault of OE’s but is most unfortunate.

This script will create a separate email message for each BCC recipient, will put them all automatically into the Outbox, will remove the BCC list from the message going to the To recipient(s), and gives you the choice of sending Now or Later. If you put everyone as a BCC recipient, and just yourself as a To recipient (with no CC recipients), each recipient will receive a message directed only to him- or herself, as if he or she is the only recipient. When there is a “real” To recipient, a line at the top of each BCC recipient’s copy is prefaced indicating that this is a BCC copy of a message sent to the To recipient (Name and ), still with no sign of any other BCC recipient evident.

Separate Group Messages

This script will send a separate e-mail to each member of a Group, so that each recipient sees only his or her own name and address as a To: recipient, and is unaware that s/he is part of a group mailing. Sig Export & Import

This package consists of two scripts. The first, "Signature Export," will export all your signatures to a tab-delimited text file that includes the name of the sig, an indication of whether the sig is included in OE's "random" list, and the text of the sig itself. The second script, "Signature Import," is the inverse of the first and will read in a text file in the same format as that created by "Signature Import" and create corresponding signatures in OE.

Note: Some special character sequences are used to handle tabs, returns, and backslashes in the body of a sig, so please be sure to consult the included ReadMe file.

Simple Security 1.0

This script is based on "OE5Protect 1.1" by Anthony Boyd and Kayano and is yet another password protection script. Simple Security will close OE's main window before asking for the password to be entered, without the need for any third-party scripting additions, though unfortunately, it will not reopen the main window afterwards. Also, Simple Security will exit more gracefully should the wrong password be entered.

SOFT-WRAP TEXT

Soft-Wrap Text will soft-wrap the text of any received plain text message to fill the full width of its window, while preserving hardwrapping for ends of paragraphs, empty lines, signatures preceded by --, lines beginning with a space, tab, bullet, < or > including quoted text, and long dashed separator lines. You can even soft-wrap your own sent messages, which OE cannot normally do, by allowing the script to convert the message to an "incoming message" type in order to do the softwrapping. (If you choose to do so, you will not be able to do an automatic "Resend" from the Message menu in future, but otherwise there should be no other consequences.)

You can select as many, or all, messages as you wish in a folder and run the script on all of them in one go. You can also choose to run this script from a Mail Rule on in order to soft-wrap plain text messages as they come in. There is a safety feature built in not to act on messages which are already HTML.

SORT BY FIELD with STANDARDIZE FIELDS and OPEN CONTACT

Sort by Field script allows you to sort your Address Book by virtually any of the Contact ¹elds that are not available as sortable columns in in the main Address Book page: Country/State/City, Zip or Postal Code, Phone Number, Country/Phone, Phone - One Country, Custom Fields, Custom Dates or Notes. It will give you a list – ordered alphabetically for geographical names, numerically for phone numbers and zip codes, and annually (Jan 1 through Dec 31 irrespective of year) or strictly chronologically (including year) for custom dates, and structured with sub-categories in some cases - of every entry in that ¹eld for which there is a contact, with the contact's name, or company and department if no name is recorded, and default email address. Thus you can see at a glance all your contacts within the same city or telephone area code, for example, or check the ordered phone number list to see who is phoning you if you have Caller ID and you see only the calling number. The lists remain easily available in a Fields folder and can be consulted, printed out, or updated at any time. The email address is dynamically under linked: clicking on it will bring up an email addressed to the contact. If you wish, you can then run Open Contact to open the contact's Contact card to view all the other contact information recorded. Open Contact can also be used separately to open up the contact card of all recipients in a new outgoing message or a saved message you have previously sent, and will make a new Contact entry in your Address Book for any such recipient not already listed.

You may discover that you have various versions of the same ¹eld value entered in Address Book contacts (such as "North Carolina" ,"N. C." and "NC"). Run Standardize Fields afterwards to merge these fields and make other corrections. You will ¹nd it useful for the Country/State/City, Zip or Postal Code, all the Custom Dates, and all the various Phone ¹elds. Furthermore, you always have the option to apply any changes you make in the lists also to the actual contact entries in the Address Book, which means in turn that later updates of Sort by Field won't have to be standardized again. For small adjustments, you can edit the lists directly very easily right on the page. For Custom Dates, you can expunge hundreds of improperly-formatted dates (such as 0/0/00, derived from importing) all in one go, and apply manually-edited corrections as well, to your Address Book contacts by one single script run of Standardize Fields. Sort by Field and Standardize Fields thus become a way of really cleaning up a big Address Book without fuss and bother, and will allow you to use your Outlook Express Address Book as your general address book.

Strip [*] Headers from Subject v1.2

Many mailing lists will insert the name of the list as a prefix in the Subject field of every message, to help the recipient identify the message as coming from the list. For instance, a message with the subject, "Help me copy a file" sent to the mailing list "iBook-users", would be changed to this subject:

"[iBook-users] Help me copy a file"

Replies to this message will now become:

"Re: [iBook-users] Help me copy a file"

Many of us who are sophisticated enough to use OE's mailing list manager do not need such a long prefix on messages. We use MLM to sort our lists into their own folders. So, we want to strip such prefix strings out of the subject field, allowing them to sort normally.

This little AppleScript will do just that for you. It will strip the list name (whatever it is, as long as it appears between brackets, as in [listname]) and the enclosing brackets out from the subject field, whether it is a reply or not. You can run this script separately on selected messages, or you can apply it via a Rule to run automatically on incoming messages.

Strip HTML Code collapse blanks

This script takes a message formatted in HTML and turns it into plain text.

This is a version of an earlier script, "Strip HTML code" originally by Phil Kearney, , which stripped out all the HTML code from a message. It has been modified to also replace all instances of "=20" with a space (which is what that code represents), and to collapse contiguous blank lines to a single blank line. I tested it on several HTML message in Outlook Express, and it worked fine. Just put the saved script into your Script Menu Items folder, where the earlier script is. You can then use it from the Script menu, or assign it as an action in a rule for incoming messages.

Note: This script was originally named Strip HTML Code v2.

Toggle Status 1.1

These five scripts do pretty much what their names suggest: They toggle a particular status flag on selected messages in Outlook Express. The status flags that can be toggled are read/unread, sent/unsent, replied to, forwarded, and redirected.

Version 1.1 combines all the "toggle status" scripts in a single package with a ReadMe file. More important, Allen Watson has added code to the "toggle read status" and "toggle replied-to status" scripts that prevents them from being mistakenly applied to outgoing messages, as well as code to the "toggle sent status" script that prevents it from being inadvertently applied to incoming messages.
